Floriography at Chrissie Cotter Gallery

  Monday 29 August 2022

Sally Mowbray’s painting exhibition Floriography combines floral and plant motifs from different sources and eras.

“The work references textiles and palimpsests along with collected plant and weed specimens,” Sallysaid.

“The larger paintings in this show are made in single layers and aim to give a sense of a fleeting glimpse where shadows interchange with forms.

“The smaller works tend to hold accumulations of oil paint wax and marble dust giving them a mineral ballast and sense of history.

“Visual ideas and preoccupations encountered during the production of this body of work include shadows, gravity, tangles, materiality,” Sally said.

A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, Sally Mowbray lives in Sydney’s Inner West where she works as a painting tutor at the Art Est Art School and Sydney Community College.
