Backyard BBQs and fire pits

Backyard burning and unauthorised incineration is not permitted at any time in all council areas in Sydney.

You are however permitted to cook or BBQ in an open fire pit, so long as you only use:

  • dry seasoned wood
  • liquid petroleum gas (LPG)
  • natural gas, or
  • proprietary barbecue fuel (including a small quantity of fire starter)

If you follow the regulations, you can use domestic wood fired pizza ovens and chimineas in residential areas.

Find specific details about the regulation in Schedule 1 of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2022.
