Two Inner West Council employees have been recognised at the 2016 Local Government Aboriginal Network Conference.

Tara Day-Williams won the award for non-Aboriginal Employee in Local Government for distinguished service by achievement.

Ms Day-Williams, a Team Leader in Community Planning and Development was acknowledged for supporting and understanding Aboriginal indoor workers, and advocating for further education of all non-Indigenous workers to enable better understanding of Aboriginal peoples and communities.

Deborah Lennis won the award for Council Indoor Employee (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) for distinguished service by achievement within their work area over and above their job requirements.

Ms Lennis is a Community Development Officer – Aboriginal Programs. She is an Elder who has mentored young Council workers, and is an outstanding educator of Aboriginal culture, history and affairs within inner west communities and Council.

Ms Lennis shares her culture and language in ways that engage diverse people, from children to older adults and people of all backgrounds.

Inner West Council is home to a significant number of Aboriginal residents and important Aboriginal heritage and cultural sites.

Council’s aims for the local community include the promotion of awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal art, culture, and history.

Inner West Council’s commitment to these principles is guided by the visions of the three former councils that make up Inner West Council, including Ashfield Council’s 2014-2016 Reconciliation Action Plan, Leichhardt Council's Principles of Cooperation and Reconciliation Statement, and Marrickville Council Statement of Commitment to Aboriginal Australians.

The NSW Local Government Aboriginal Network has been operating since 1988. The annual conference provides information exchange and acts as a forum for discussion on Local Government issues relating to Aboriginal communities, business and the wider community.

The 2016 NSW Local Government Aboriginal Network was held in late August in Tweed Heads.
