Big Bike Week Rides into the Inner West

The first ever Inner West Big Bike Week will feature free workshops and events across the new Inner West Council local government area to celebrate NSW Bike Week in September.

Starting 18 September, Inner West Big Bike Week will build to Big Bike Day to be held at War Memorial Park in Lilyfield from 10am to 2.30pm on Sunday 25 September.

Big Bike Day is for both avid and casual bike riders of all ages. Along with a group ride leaving War Memorial Park at noon, there will be obstacle courses, a skills workshop, rock climbing, stunt shows, face painting, pedal-powered smoothies, try-a-bike and a free lunch.

The Cooks River Family Fun Ride on Sunday 18 September also offers a great way to get the whole family riding starting from Steel Park in Marrickville.

A mechanic will be on hand for free bike tune ups before the group goes on a mostly off-road guided ride. There is a short 5km option and the longer 16km ride. Riders will need a road worthy bike and helmet with bike tune-ups at 8.30am, registration at 9am and the ride from 9.30am till 12pm.

Sunday 18 September will also feature a City Cycle Confidence Course from 9am-1.30pm at Johnson Park in Dulwich Hill, designed for all those who know how to ride a bike but want more experience riding on the road and for safer cycling across the city. Registrations are required via the Council website.

There will be a Bicycle Maintenance Workshop at Ashfield Public School on Wednesday 21 September from 6.30pm to 9pm with each rider needing to bring their own bike and be willing to work on it.

Participants will learn the basics of caring for their bike, including putting air in the tyres, cleaning the chain, adjusting brakes and changing and repairing tubes. Registrations are required.

Saturday Slowies Group Ride on Saturday 24 September will see Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club lead riders on a relaxed on-road group ride from Marrickville to Centennial Park and back. As well as the ride, all are welcome to join the group for coffee at the end. Meet at Post Café, cnr Marrickville Rd and Silver St at 8,25am with road worthy bike, helmet and a working bike light.

NSW Bike Week (17-25 September) is the annual statewide festival that celebrates all things bicycle-related and active lifestyles.
