Rates rebates for eligible pensioners

Discounts on Council rates for eligible pensioners living in the Inner West.

Available Rebates to Eligible Pensioners

Pensioners may apply for the following rebates:

  1. Statutory Pensioner Rebate (up to $250)
Eligible pensioners can receive up to $250 per year off their rates and charges (this is a statutory rebate provided under Section 575 of the Local Government Act 1993).
  2. Additional Council rebate
Inner West Council provides an extra rebate for eligible pensioners who have lived in the Inner West Local Government Area (LGA) for 10 years or more (we call this a voluntary rebate).

    This rebate includes:
    -  100% of one domestic waste service, and
    -  100% of the stormwater charge

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to receive the Statutory Pensioner Rebate (up to $250), you must be a current holder of one of the following cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) issued by Centrelink
  • Pensioner Concession Card issued by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), being:

-Gold card embossed with ‘TPI’ (Totally Permanently Incapacitated)
-Gold card embossed with ‘EDA’ (Extreme Disablement Adjustment)
-War widow or widower (WW) entitled to the pensioner concession card

If you do not hold a concession card, you can apply through Centrelink or Department of Veterans Affairs.

Please note, Council is required to confirm your eligibility with Centrelink at least once a year. If your pension is removed or suspended for any reason, we are unable to apply the rebate, and you will need to reapply to reinstate the rebate.

You must also:

  • Be listed on the Certificate of Title as the owner or co-owner of the property
  • Reside at the property as your sole or principal place of residence

If you jointly own the property, any other owner (other than your spouse or de-facto) who is also an eligible pensioner will need to complete a separate form in order to receive the maximum rebate, otherwise only a partial rebate will be granted. Only one rebate is available per property.

To be eligible for the additional rebate – which provides up to 100% of one domestic waste service and 100% of the stormwater management charge, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be eligible for the statutory pensioner as outlined above
  • Have owned and resided in a residential property within the Inner West Council Local Government Area (LGA) for at least ten (10) years.

  • If you were eligible for a pensioner concession in the past but are only now applying, your rebate may be backdated to the start of the previous financial year only.
  • Once Council receives your pensioner concession application form, we will verify your eligibility for that period and apply any backdated rebate you are entitled to.
