What you need to know
The rules
It's against the law to block someone's driveway. This is covered under Road Rule 198(2) and the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021. As the local authority, Inner West Council can take action when this happens.
How to report a blocked driveway
If a vehicle is parked in a way that partially or completely blocks your driveway, you can report it to Council's Parking Services.
Reports are only accepted from the resident affected, and you must provide your contact number. Officers are available to respond between 8am and 9.30pm daily.
To report:
Call Council Customer Service on 02 9392 5000, or
Report a blocked driveway or similar obstruction
What happens next
Once a report is received, a Council officer will inspect the situation. If the driveway is blocked, the officer will decide the appropriate action:
- Fully blocked driveway: The officer may issue a fine and arrange for the vehicle to be towed to a safe location.
- Partially blocked driveway: A fine may be issued.
All decisions are made at the discretion of the parking officer.
Please note:
- In some locations, such as narrow laneways, towing may not be possible.
- Some vehicles may not be able to be towed due to their size, position or limited access.
- Council works with external towing companies, so we can't provide an exact time for when a vehicle will be towed.
