Our Fairer Future Plan 2 [draft]

Responding to the NSW Government's housing proposal in a way that better protects what makes the Inner West great.
Delivering more homes the Inner West way

We know we have a housing crisis in Sydney, and everyone needs to play their part to tackle it. But the NSW Government has a one-size-fits-all plan for how councils should increase housing that threatens what makes the Inner West special.

That’s what Our Fairer Future is about. Responding to the NSW Government’s proposal in a way that better protects what makes the Inner West great – protecting our heritage, delivering a mix of apartments, houses and affordable housing for those who need it, investing in revitalising town centres and supporting local businesses, and ensuring new housing is matched with new or upgraded infrastructure like parks, public transport, places for recreation and more.

It’s not a matter of whether new housing should be delivered. It’s about how we do it.

That’s why we’ve asked industry experts to draft a plan for us that considers where and how new homes could be delivered in a way that is sustainable, accessible and feasible. These plans have been carefully created by those who understand the complexities of growing communities.

It considers things like:

  • Delivering homes around town centres and transport hubs to also revitalise Inner West shopping and entertainment precincts.
  • Select areas to change building height limits to deliver more homes, more evenly.
  • Ensuring a mix of types of homes such as apartments, affordable housing, shop front housing and more.
  • What supporting open space and infrastructure is needed, including proposing a new Iron Cove to Ashfield GreenWay

It’s important to note that while some areas may be proposed for increased residential density, no one will be forced to sell their home. It simply means if they choose to in the future their property will have an increased value.

What’s in the draft plan may not all be right, it’s a conversation starter. The right plan is the one that is shaped by the community’s experience and insights. That’s why over the next few months we’re asking you to share your thoughts on how we can best deliver the housing we need, the Inner West way.

You can have your say from 16 September 2026. You'll also be able to use our interactive map to look up your property and see how you may be affected. Register here [[[LINK]]] to be notified when the consultation opens.
