Henson Park was the site of a brick pit until 1918, and its closure left an immense water hole which became a public danger. Council purchased the site and drained and filled the hole, providing relief work for hundreds of people during The Great Depression.
The ground was officially opened in 1933. Soon afterwards it hosted the cycling events and the closing ceremony of the 1938 British Empire Games, the forerunner to today's Commonwealth Games.
