About Inner West Council

Inner West Council is one of Sydney's larger metropolitan local government councils, looking after a community of 200,000 people living in some of the inner city's most vibrant, creative, liveable, and diverse suburbs.

We are here to be of service to our local community and make the Inner West a great place to be. We’re building a stronger, more inclusive community, one innovative service at a time.

Inner West Council was the 2023 AR Bluett Award winner, recognised as the most progressive council across NSW. We are also the Australian Business Awards Employer of Choice Winner for 2023 and are a recognised by Diversity Council Australia as an Inclusive Employer (2025-2026).

Join us as we work to become the best council for the community we serve.

Inclusion matters to us and we're taking action

That’s why we’ve developed our Disability Inclusion Action Plan. Real inclusion means everyone can access, participate and thrive no matter their age, ability, faith, cultural heritage or sexual preference.

Council is dedicated to reflecting our community and strongly encourages applications from:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • people with disability
  • people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • people of diverse sexualities and genders, and
  • veterans, young people, and mature-aged people.

Council is intent on respecting the rights and improving opportunities for people with disability.

If you identify as a person with disability and require reasonable adjustments to support you in your application and throughout the recruitment process, please contact Julia Phillips at julia.phillips@innerwest.nsw.gov.au

Inner West Council is thrilled to offer innovative paid trainee, apprentice and cadet programs. We have several paid traineeship roles available where you can gain a certificate while you work. These range from early learning to engineering and IT.

Careers with Council

Council aims to foster the development and growth of our trainees throughout their training with us.

We regularly seek and welcome trainees to join and develop their career in the industry alongside our professional and skilled staff.

As a trainee, apprentice or cadet, you'll be provided with on-the-job work experience combined with the completion of a nationally recognised qualification through TAFE or a registered training organisation (RTO). We work closely with support providers to ensure you have all the support you need to bring your best self to work.

Council supports staff with disability with an active Disability Employee Network (DEN).

We encourage any staff member with disability or those of you who are carers to join Inner West Council's DEN.

The DEN aims to create a safe space for employees with disabilities to talk about how barriers affect their day-to-day working life. It gives opportunity for adjustments to be made to make Council a more inclusive and accessible environment for you and those who come into Council as a workplace in the future.

It’s a clear sign of Council's commitment to being an inclusive, diverse and welcoming workplace where employees with disability feel supported and valued.

By joining the DEN, you can enjoy the benefits of:

  • increasing engagement and connection with colleagues
  • bringing tangible action to workplace values of Integrity, Respect, Innovation, Compassion and Collaboration
  • creating awareness of disability and a culture of inclusion for people with disability
  • providing opportunities to lead strategies and projects outside your day-to-day role
  • building new networks, and
  • developing personal and professional skills.

By overcoming barriers, they bring fresh perspectives, resilience, and creativity to our organisation’s culture. We consider the Inner West Council DEN more than a network - it's a hub for bold, innovative problem solving.
