Weavings of Art and Life (2011)

In 2011 the former Leichhardt Council commissioned Bronwyn Bancroft to complete her public artwork, Weavings of Light and Life, which stands outside of the Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre (No. 17).

Bronwyn used her skills as a colourist in this beautiful work, which is a series of seven glass panels reminiscent of stained glass. Each design was created in response to the local landscape and history of the original people who lived in the area.

These works honour the past and show respect for the Custodians of the land.

Each of the seven panels has a theme:

  • The Land and Foreshore
  • Food collection
  • Food collected by fishing with hand made hooks
  • Song lines - being able to enter another Aboriginal group's boundary
  • Kinship - family law and connections
  • A shield for protection of lands and family
  • Water- the source of life as found in streams around the area.
