Girls Get Active day

Thursday 5 March 2020

As part of Council’s International Womens Day activities, a Girls Get Active day will be held for Inner West young women.

Media are invited to attend.

Girls Get Active is a Council initiative that brings together elite female athletes with high school girls to inspire the students to try different sports in a safe and welcoming environment.

All Inner West high schools are encouraged to register. Sports include League, AFL, Soccer, Orienteering, Ultimate Frisbee and Basketball.

Girls Get Active is a partnership with Sport NSW.

Council has been investigating ways to increase the number of women and girls playing sport and participating in active recreation as part of a package of measures to create a healthier community.

As well, Council initiatives also include ways to ensure that Inner West sports clubs provide a welcoming, and positive environment for women and girls.

As part of this on-going commitment, Council has:

• Established an Office of Sport Coordinator

• Delivered regular, free female-focused skate workshops

• Hosted Respectful Relationships in Sport forums in partnership with the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect

• Entered into a partnership with Athletics Australia to make it easier for local schools, clubs and community groups to organise fun runs and athletics events

• Developed an Inner West Sporting Ground Allocation Policy, in consultation with local sporting clubs, as part of a commitment to equal access for all

• Adopted the Recreation Needs Study: A Healthier Inner West which will inform policy and strategy in the short and long term

• Invested $65 million in new park and aquatic facilities over three years
