Council and SES ‘Clean Up’ Iron Cove in time for EDGE GreenWay

Day, Date Month 2019

Inner West Council, Ashfield-Leichhardt State Emergency Service (SES) and local residents and creatives have used ingenuity and hard work to ‘Clean Up’ Iron Cove Bay in Lilyfield in time for EDGE GreenWay.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said he was incredibly proud how everyone came together on Clean Up Australia Day to sort out a complex problem.

Mayor Byrne said that Iron Cove at Lilyfield was the cleanest it’s been in years, and was ready to host EDGE GreenWay.

Bikes, chairs and shopping trolleys were removed from the famous inner west waterway as part of the nation-wide clean up.

EDGE GreenWay at Iron Cove will shine a spotlight on local creatives and environmentalists – including some who expressed concern about the abandoned rubbish revealed at low tide.

Council’s EDGE organisers assessed the site and found that a clean up was needed ahead of the event.

Cue local resident and creative producer, Adam Huie, who came to the rescue. With 25 years’ experience delivering water spectaculars, he has an intimate knowledge of harbour safety and owns an incredible collection of tugs, vessels and barges of every size, shape and vintage.

Adam coordinated SES volunteers in boats hooking the large hard rubbish items and loading them on to Adam’s floating pods, which were then brought safely to shore.

Council workers picked up the bagged rubbish and contacted companies like Trolley Tracker, Mobike and Limebike to collect their trolleys and share bikes.

Mayor Byrne said he wanted to thank everyone involved, especially volunteers from the SES and the Adam Huie.

EDGE GreenWay is set to be a night of art, performance and imagination. The gravity-defying finale by physical theatre company Legs on the Wall will take place while a Boat of Dreams sets sail, taking participants’ wishes into the sunset.

Clean Up Australia Day was Sunday, 3 March. EDGE GreenWay is Saturday, 30 March, 3-9pm.
