Local libraries join forces for Comic Con-versation 2016

From Monday 4 July to Sunday 10 July, Marrickville Library and 14 other Sydney libraries are uniting for Comic Con-versation 2016 – a celebration of the thriving local comic culture.

Comic Con-versation is an avenue for the comic community to mingle with the library community, through a diverse program of engaging events, workshops, panel sessions, exhibitions and talks which are aimed at adult’s right through to children.

Marrickville Library branches will be hosting three events, including The American Superhero – An Independence Day event (Monday 4 July); A comic trivia night (Friday 8 July) and; From Mary to Marvel – 200 years of Frankenstein (Thursday 28 July).

Presented by Richard Gray, columnist at US comic book site Newsarama, The American Superhero will analyse the patriotic figures representing America, and discuss exactly what makes their popularity so everlasting. Held at Stanmore Library, American-themed refreshments will be provided.

Quiz master Kevin Curley will host the Comic trivia night at Marrickville Library, with an evening of brain-tickling questions. Teams or individuals can be registered, with drinks, snacks and best dressed prizes to complete the fun.

Falling outside of the official Comic Con-versation dates, Mary Shelley expert Suzanne Burdon and Frankenstein enthusiast Nathan Seabolt will be discussing From Mary to Marvel – 200 years of Frankenstein. Since Frankenstein has been published, the book has seamlessly traversed the fields of fictional literature, comics, theatre and film. Held at Marrickville Library, this celebratory event will discuss Frankenstein in various forms and why it still rouses our fear of bad science and exploitation.

All bookings are now being taken through Marrickvillelibrary.eventbrite.com.au. For more information, visit marrickville.nsw.gov.au/en/library/events-at-the-library/comic-conversation-2016/.
