Inner West Welcomes New Childcare Centres Council will open two new childcare facilities in 2016/17 that will help to alleviate the acute shortage of childcare places in the inner west. The two new centres will together accommodate 120 children. The new centre in Mary Street Lilyfield, adjacent to Leichhardt Park, is set to open in September 2016, while the new facility at Steel Park Marrickville is expected to be completed by April 2017. The combined cost of the two new childcare centres is $7.5 million. Administrator Richard Pearson said the new centres, which were initiatives of the former Leichhardt and Marrickville Councils, would be hugely welcomed by local families given the shortage of childcare in the Inner West. “Both the new centres at Leichhardt Park and Steel Park are located in wonderful settings and we look forward to both opening soon to provide these urgently need places,” he said. “Council will continue to plan for the future needs of local families. We will be keeping a very close eye on demographic trends as well as closely monitoring local childcare places.” “Meeting the needs of our residents for childcare remains a key priority for the new Council as it was for the former Leichhardt, Ashfield and Marrickville Councils.” The Mary Street Lilyfield centre in Leichhardt Park is located beside an existing children’s playground and close to the Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre (LPAC) also located in Mary Street. The Centre also boasts a number of environment-friendly features that minimise the reliance on artificial heating and cooling through building design elements and also promotes water conservation with measures such as rain water collection for reuse. It has been built with an eye to a possible future conversion into an after school care facility if the demand shifts as local children grow. The Steel Park centre in Marrickville will also be located close to popular existing facilities for families including the Marrickville PCYC and Waterplay Park playground.
