Zero Waste Holidays

 present on wooden table

Let’s make this festive season full of joy, not waste. Council has put together a few ideas on going low waste over the holiday period. Another step towards zero waste.

Festive eco-tips - We have asked the community for their eco-tips for the festive season and received many wonderful videos. Watch them all on Council’s website

Avoid food waste - Get familiar with planning, storing and cooking creatively with leftovers to reduce food waste this festive season. For food waste that can’t be avoided, check out how Council can support you in diverting food waste from landfill

Keep recycling - Most wrapping paper, cards and cardboard packaging can go in your recycling bin. Items such as tinsel, plastic decorations or plastic packaging are not recyclable. Find out what goes in and what stays out

Battery recycling - Many toys come with batteries. Did you know that batteries can start fires when not disposed of correctly? We have many drop off locations in the Inner West to keep batteries safe and out of your bins all year round. Find a location close to you

Real Christmas tree recycling - After Christmas, your real tree can be recycled. Simply cut into small pieces and check our website for when and how it can be collected in your suburb.

Unwanted presents - If you receive a present that you don’t like or want, think about giving it a second life: donate it to an op shop or charity, give it away on a pay it forward page, a second hand market place or gumtree. Or maybe a friend will like it?

Spend time in nature - The best zero waste present you can give yourself is spending time in nature. It’s good for your health and good for the environment. Check out our Nature for backyards online resources to help you understand biodiversity in the local area.

And remember, the best way to reduce your waste is to avoid it in the first place. Use what you have, borrow or swap, choose second hand, make and create and if you really must buy something new, go for long lasting and sustainably produced.
