The highly anticipated renovation of the much-loved Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre will commence next month.
This project is the latest example of Council’s extensive track record in successfully delivering major aquatic and recreation upgrades, providing modern and high-quality facilities that are accessible to the entire community.
Inner West Council has awarded the tender to FDC Construction to deliver the next stage of upgrades to the outdoor pools. They will begin on Monday 29 June 2026.
FDC Construction bring strong experience in delivering state-of-the-art aquatic and community infrastructure with successful projects including the major redevelopment of our Ashfield Aquatic Centre which continues to be hugely popular.
Together, Inner West Council and FDC Construction have a proven record of ensuring major projects like this are completed on time and within budget, while delivering a high-quality service.
LPAC opened in the 1960s, and this major renovation is essential to bring the outdoor pools up to standard as they have reached the end of their operational lifespan.
The facility is one of the most popular in Sydney, visited by more than 760,000 people each year. This upgrade will ensure it can be enjoyed by our community for decades to come.
Council is delivering a new heated 50 metre Olympic pool and a new multi-use 25m pool with a moveable floor to support a wider range of users and programs. This will enhance both accessibility and flexibility, supporting activities such as learn-to-swim programs, rehabilitation, lap swimming, water polo and aqua aerobics.
This builds on the first stage of works, officially opened in February 2026, which included a new splash pad, upgraded mushroom pool, BBQs and outdoor seating.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre is one of the Inner West’s most important community facilities and this major renovation will secure its future for the next 50 years.
“This is the biggest renovation ever undertaken at Leichhardt Pool. The Aquatic Centre opened in 1960 and has been much loved by families, locals and athletes for generations. We’re committed to making sure the centre remains safe, modern and fit-for-purpose,” Mayor Darcy Bryne said.
“Projects like this are at the core of what Council is about – not just creating a space for the community but ensuring it is maintained and updated so it can be something we can all continue to enjoy and be proud of.
“We know this renovation is something locals are really excited about. We’re determined to deliver it responsibly and we’ve shown we’re up to the task.
“As with many major aquatic centre upgrades, due to the age and the scale and complexity of this site, construction will be a multi-year project.
“We will continue to keep our community and aquatic centre members informed as the project progresses. In the meantime, what a great chance to check out some of our other fantastic aquatic centres.”
Council will work closely with FDC Construction as works commence and provide regular updates to the community as timelines become clearer.
The outdoor pools will be closed from 29 June 2026 and will remain closed for all of 2027.
The surrounding gym, excluding outdoor aqua classes, and recreation facilities will remain open to the public. The indoor pools, including hydrotherapy and learn-to-swim lessons, will also remain open, with the mushroom pool and splashpad able to operate during summer.
