The Vietnamese community has had an enormous impact on everyday life in Marrickville.
According to Marrickville – Rural Outpost to Inner City (Cashman & Meader - 1990), the Vietnamese were part of the ‘third wave of migrants’ that occurred post-1945:
“During the 1980s the Vietnamese-born moved into Marrickville as fast as the Greek-born moved out and by 1986 the Vietnamese were the second largest non-English-speaking group in Marrickville.”
Anyone who has connections to the area or has Vietnamese heritage is invited to participate in this project.
Participants are asked:
• Where the precinct should start and end on Illawarra Road
• If they support the name Little Vietnam
A workshop at Herb Greedy Hall on Friday 7 May, 2pm-3pm will provide a space for people to provide feedback and share stories in a format that suits them best.
An accredited interpreter from Council will help facilitate.

Council officers and an interpreter will also walk along Marrickville and Illawarra Roads on Saturday 8 May, 2-5pm.

Council is inviting local businesses, Vietnamese organisations and the local community to have a say on a proposed Vietnamese precinct along Illawarra Road in Marrickville.
