HomeCycle for apartments

Learn how the Inner West HomeCycle collection service works for apartment buildings

HomeCycle doorstep recycling – put more out, less often

The Inner West-funded HomeCycle program helps residents recycle hard-to-recycle items like soft plastics, textiles and e-waste.

Unlike individual HomeCycle bookings, apartment buildings can book shared collections where all residents can take part. This allows more items to be collected at once, with fewer pickups needed.

Apartment collections require a minimum of four bags, but there is no limit to how much can be collected (provided it’s only from residents). More residents participating, means more material diverted from landfill!

How does HomeCycle for apartments work?

1. Register your building

Contact HomeCycle to set up the service for your building. HomeCycle will review the building layout, access requirements and collection arrangements.

2. Create one building account

Each apartment building should have one HomeCycle account, managed by the building manager, strata committee or a nominated resident.

3. Order or download your Inner West HomeCycle starter kit and let residents know

Download the Inner West HomeCycle starter kit or request printed copies below. Tell residents about the service and how they can take part.

4. Book a collection

Book a collection through the shared HomeCycle account. Apartment collections require a minimum of four bags.

All materials must be sorted into separate collection streams before pickup. Mixed or contaminated materials may not be collected. The building contact will set up labelled tubs or containers in an agreed collection area. Residents then place their items into the correct tubs, ensuring each material type is separated.

HomeCycle will collect the materials from the agreed location on the scheduled date.

5. Repeat as needed

Setup a collection schedule directly with your HomeCycle contact. Frequency will depend on resident participation.

Benefits of shared collections

  • Reduced wait times
  • More residents participating = more materials given a second life
  • Fewer pick-ups mean lower environmental impact

The best setup will depend on your building's layout and bin room space.

To avoid confusion, do not use Council bins for HomeCycle collections. HomeCycle materials should be collected in separate, clearly labelled containers.

Using wheeled tubs or containers that can be easily moved on collection day is recommended. Smaller tubs or containers can be used items such as household batteries and blister packs.

There are five separate pick-up categories that materials must be correctly sorted into (full details available on the HomeCycle website):

  1. Clothing, manchester, shoes, fashion accessories and toys
  2. Small household appliances, electronic waste
  3. Soft plastics
  4. Problem waste
  5. Polystyrene

Where possible, HomeCycle will collect materials directly from the building's bin room.

If this isn't practical, materials can be placed in another agreed location, such as the foyer or front of the building.

The collection location will be agreed between HomeCycle and the building contact before the first pickup.

Apartment buildings are not restricted to four bookings per year like households.

HomeCycle collection schedules vary depending on building participation and size.

Setup a collection schedule directly with your HomeCycle contact.

Each building nominates one person to manage HomeCycle bookings. This can be the building manager, strata committee, or a resident volunteer.

The nominated contact will create a HomeCycle account to book collections online. Alternatively, collections can be booked by phone or email.

Apartment collections require a minimum of four bags.

There is no maximum amount that can be collected. If you have more than one cubic metre of material ready for pickup, please let HomeCycle know when booking so they can prepare for a larger collection.
