Elijah Kinnavong Beyond the Studio Annandale Ghost
VONG: WIP ALBUM LISTENING PARTY Presented by Annandale Ghosts
Saturday 22 August 9pm
113 Parramatta Road, Annandale (near Johnston Street)
This is a listening party for my upcoming album project as part of my honours project at university.
The idea of the album is a self portrait - The working title of this album-portrait is “walkabout”
It is primarily hip-hop rooted, with beatmaking drawing from J Dilla’s genre-defining sampling and boundary-pushing collectives like SBE.
It features a mix of highs/lows, open/closeness, ugliness/beauty. Different styles and expressions, ranging from trap, soulful, club, with features from many friends.
It’s a journal; it explores how themes of love, anxiety, passion and desperation become beautifully blended, lost and rediscovered in a never ending cycle of renavigating identity, relationships, culture and self.
Come hang, come listen, come step into my world for a night.
Elijah Kinnavong is a young Lao-Gamilaraay man born on Gandangara and raised on Dharawal land/southwest Sydney (Liverpool-Campbelltown). His mother is a Gamilaraay woman and his dad a refugee from Laos, both growing up in Tamworth.
His work generally focuses on the interplay and dynamics of connection within family and culture drawing from his experience growing up in blended families and mixed heritage. He often works with portraiture, using family photos as references to paint and reimagine whilst also documenting his own life in music.
Annandale Ghost is the studio extension project of artists Katy B Plummer and Kuba Dorabialski. It is a new, multi-generational, multi-arts venue on grimy, gorgeous Parramatta Road, hosting occasional gigs, screenings, community events, workshops and artist-run studio sales.
