Sunday 26 July 2026 – Inner West Council
Inner West Council’s Urban Ecology team invites you to take part in National Tree Day on Sunday 26 July 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to get your hands dirty, give back to the community and be part of our group effort to improve biodiversity in the Inner West!
National Tree Day is an opportunity to plant local native species, grown with the help of volunteers. This year's planting event will increase habitat corridors for local native fauna along the river by restoring an area of Estuarine Swamp Oak Forest. Featuring a unique assemblage of plants that make up this floodplain community and show you what Country you are on.
Your participation in National Tree Day helps combat the widespread loss of urban bushland, in a combined effort to restore midstory and understory vegetation and provide crucial habitat to native small bird species, reptiles, marsupials and mammals. Expect to see and learn about all the locally native plants and Natural Areas of the Inner West!
Location: HJ Mahoney Reserve, Wharf St, Marrickville.
No experience is necessary as all training, tools, and on-site supervision are provided. Please bring/wear; water bottle, hat, sunscreen, long-sleeve shirt, long pants and closed sturdy shoes.
Family friendly event - all ages welcome!
Three separate tree planting sessions will be running on the day. Please register for your preferred session time below.

Friday 24 July 2026 - National Schools Tree Day
Council supports local schools and early childhood learning centres to participate in National Schools Tree Day, Australia's biggest tree planting and nature-care event.
Council can provide up to 25 free native plants each year to Inner West schools and early childhood learning centres. These plants include grasses, shrubs, vines and other groundcovers which are ideal as a standalone planting or for planting under large trees to help mulch and protect them and create habitat for other native species. The species provided are based on what our Community Nurseries at Marrickville and Annandale have in stock at that time.
A limited selection of stock is also available for sale to schools at a cost of $4.40 per plant (tubestock).
- Only one request per school from a school staff member (not a parent or P&C)
