Inner West 15000 documents men and women who served in WWI from the Inner West Council (IWC) Local Government Area.

Leichhardt Historical Journal was written by Dr Peter Reynolds, a labour of love and dedication to the Architectural history of Leichhardt Balmain, Annandale, Lilyfield and Rozelle suburbs is now available online.

Our Community History and Heritage team are passionate about providing you with the rich history that the inner west area has to offer. From recording the memories of people’s unique life experiences, to providing information on the history of your house and hosting an array of guest speaker events, there is plenty on offer on the Local Notes blog site.

Close to 15,000 men and women from the Inner West Council (IWC) Local Government Area, including the suburbs of Annandale, Ashfield, Ashbury, Balmain, Birchgrove, Camperdown, Croydon, Croydon Park, Dulwich Hill, Dobroyd Point, Enmore, Haberfield, Hurlstone Park, Leichhardt, Lewisham, Lilyfield, Marrickville, Newtown, Petersham, Rozelle, St Peters, Stanmore, Summer Hill, Sydenham and Tempe.

This site is dedicated to listing and recording the stories of those men who fought in World War One and capturing stories, ephemera and memorabilia from families, friends, loved ones and historical enthusiasts. It attempts to document the experience of not just the men but also the women of the Inner West, who held full-time employment and raised families while their men went to war.

The AIF Project (UNSW Canberra) database lists 14,280 enlistments of individuals who went to war who either lived, were born or enlisted in the Inner West. We have endeavoured to include as many as we can find on this website. The numbers reach closer to 15,000 once are added members of the Australian Flying Corps, the Royal Australian Navy, nurses and other medical staff.

Welcome to the Inner West 15000

When war was declared in 1914, Haberfield was a young suburb with some 3,500 residents. Six hundred and fifty-nine answered the call to war of whom 102 men made the ultimate sacrifice. Another 18 would die within five years of the Armistice.

Influenza, other illness and ‘shell shock’ were commonplace amongst the troops with infection rife in the casualty clearing stations. While some of the troops displayed roguish, un-disciplined or insubordinate behaviour, 35 were awarded medals for bravery and conspicuous service or mentioned in dispatches from the various battlefields.

Seven soldiers were taken prisoner of war. Seventy-seven men who served during World War I also enlisted during World War II with six making the ultimate sacrifice during that conflict.

The entries on the website are not intended as biographies but rather as profiles of important instances during their war service and, where information is available, in their personal lives. Whilst some information may be upsetting to relatives, all details come directly from service records and news reports of their later lives. This work is intended to lead to an appreciation of the personal sacrifices of the serving men and women of Haberfield and the intergenerational effect on their families.

The Leichhardt Historical Journal contains primary research on local history within the pre-2003 Leichhardt local government area. The journal is published by Leichhardt Historical Journal, an incorporated, voluntary, non-profit organisation.
