Sustainable Tips This Festive Season

Wishing you all happy holidays and a joyful time with friends and family. Whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Summer Solstice, Lunar New Year or another event over the summer, here are some tips to help minimise waste this festive season.

🌱 Give a gift that is literally green. Plants are a great option as they are waste free and benefit our natural environment. You can pick up native seedlings at a Council nursery.

🎟️ Give gifts your friends and family actually want. Home made puddings, chutneys and sweet treats, or experience gifts like concert or show tickets and vouchers for their favourite local businesses are a great way to minimise waste and ensure your gifts will be used and loved.

🎁 Get creative with wrapping. Reuse newspapers, gift bags, and fabrics to wrap presents, or even incorporate a gift such as a scarf or tea towel. Use string to tie up instead of plastic sticky tape!

♻️ Support local reuse organisations and markets for gift ideas. Reverse Garbage have a range of fun reuse suggestions.

🔨 If you’re doing a big house or garden tidy up this summer, check out the tools for hire at the Inner West Tool Library. You can even hire a dehydrator to make dried fruit decorations like in the above image.

🎄 After the festivities, book a Council Christmas tree collection.
