Inner West Council will start the design of a second GreenWay corridor after the first pedestrian and cycling route became a major attraction drawing nearly one million visitors in its first year.
The Cooks River to Iron Cove GreenWay has become a major Inner West attraction and was named ‘Local Project of the Year’ at the 2026 Sydney Awards last week.
Since opening in December 2025, the first GreenWay has transformed how locals travel around and enjoy the Inner West. The 6km recreation and biodiversity corridor linking Marrickville to Iron Cove is on track to attract nearly one million visits in its first year, while making it easier for residents to walk and cycle to work, school and local destinations.
Following this success, Council has begun design work on a new GreenWay between Ashfield and Iron Cove, identifying opportunities for staged delivery through Ashfield, Croydon and Haberfield.
The 3.5km route would create a largely off-road walking and cycling corridor featuring creek-side parks, habitat restoration, an elevated canal boardwalk and safer crossings at Parramatta Road and Ramsay Road.
The project will turn an inaccessible stormwater canal into a strategic link for recreation, active transport and urban greening across the Inner West, connecting residents to the Bay Run, local centres and Sydney's wider transport network.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said:
"We're incredibly proud of the success of the GreenWay, which is being used not only by Inner West residents but by Sydneysiders more broadly as both a recreational destination and an active transport corridor.”
“When you're seeing more than 2,500 pedestrian and cyclist movements in a single day and are on track for one million visits in the first year, it's clear the GreenWay has exceeded expectations.
"That's why we're moving ahead with plans for the Ashfield to Iron Cove GreenWay, creating another major active transport connection across the Inner West.
"As we prepare to welcome thousands of new residents, we need better public transport, cycling and walking connections to keep our neighbourhoods connected and liveable.
"The Ashfield to Iron Cove GreenWay, together with rapid transit on Parramatta Road and upgrades to the Inner West Light Rail, will help create a transport network fit for the future."
