New Art at Newtown ArtSeat

Tuesday 5 September 2017

Pull Your Punches, by local artist Wendy Murray, was installed at Newtown’s ArtSeat on Friday morning and represents a socio-historical investigation into poster making.

“My inspiration comes from the fascinating and rich social and political poster histories; of the Americas and Australia,” Wendy said.

“Despite the changes in image reproduction technologies, the poster remains a significant and powerful medium for artists, activists and commercial entities to communicate to a mass, public audience.”

“Newtown has a rich past of activism, mural and poster histories. As gentrification sweeps through Sydney, closing down live music venues, forcing rents up for art studios and Artist Run Initiatives – I am concerned Newtown’s strong, visible social voice will be lost,” Wendy said.

This work pays homage “to some of the organisations and artists who have contributed to poster histories in the area,” Wendy said.

Inner West Council’s ArtSeat is a permanent structure in Newtown Square that provides local, emerging and established artists with a space where experimental and non-commercial art can be showcased.

Incorporating public seating and lighting, the Art Seat is also a landmark meeting point.
