Marrickville Park upgrade opening

Tuesday 4 July 2017

Marrickville Park upgrade will be officially opened on Saturday 15 July at 1pm.

Media are invited to attend.

The $3.3 million upgrade includes the Sporting Walk of Honour and new WWII memorial, new playground, picnic facilities, fitness station, sports amenities building and public toilets, Tennis Club upgrade, loop path, lighting, multi-use court, sports oval picket fencing, tree and garden planting.

Families of some of the sports people named in the Sporting Walk of Honour, sporting club representatives, ex-Marrickville Councillors and the local community will attend.

The Sports Walk of Honour identifies high-achieving sportspeople who were born or lived in the Marrickville area – including Test cricketers, Olympic swimmers, world champion boxers, Grand Prix-winning motorcyclists, and tennis, soccer, League, cycling and basketball champions.

Names include Bob Simpson, Annette Kellerman, Jeff Fenech, Fanny Durack, Tim Cahill – and four of Bradman’s ‘Invincibles’: Bill Brown, Ernie Toshack, Ron Saggers and Sid Barnes .

The WWII Memorial is a new contemporary public artwork by Andrew Poppleton, which references and is inspired by the ‘Australian Rising Sun badge’ by Adelaide artist Frank Bartels in 1893 showing bayonet blades arrayed around a crown.

The symbol is integral to the Australian Army Uniform and symbolises the sacrifices made by Australia’s naval and military forces.

The large scale (2m high x 2.3m high) artwork is orientated on a North - South access to interact with the rising and setting sun. Daylight shines through the sculpture’s arc void to highlight the names of deceased soldiers inscribed either side of the memorial.

WHEN: Saturday 15 July, 1pm
