A new skate space at Sydenham Green

Tuesday 5 September 2017

Inner West Council will commence construction of the new skate space at Sydenham Green this month.

The skate park, which was first proposed in the 2013 Plan of Management and Master Plan for Sydenham Green, has been enthusiastically supported by the local community.

The design was developed with extensive community and stakeholder input over multiple consultation sessions.

The new skate space will incorporate a variety of skate types including transition, street skate and a bowl.

The facility will include parking, two accessible car spaces, lighting, a shade structure, drinking fountain and seating.

The skate space will incorporate many environmentally-friendly and community-minded features:

• ‘Green concrete’, which lowers the amount of Portland cement by up to 65%. Portland cement is a non-renewable energy intensive resource.

• Working with Wheel Chair Motor-cross sports to ensure the design is inclusive - including ramps to all platforms.

• LED lighting, which minimises electricity consumption.

• Installation of more than 20 trees, to increase the urban tree canopy

The new skate space is just one of a number of planned improvements at Sydenham Green, including a new playground shade structure, and the replacement of the existing half court basketball court with two full sized basketball courts which will include Roller Derby track linemarking, lighting, bike parking and seating.

As well, Council will develop an interpretive space on the site of the former church on Railway Road.

Construction on the new skate space commences soon. During construction the portion of the park bound by Henry Street, Railway Lane and Railway Road will be closed to public access.

The facility will open in early 2018.
