The Sixth Mass Extinction - Kassandra Bossell

The "Sixth Mass Extinction" is a stencil art guerilla pavement project created with community drawing attention the ongoing extinction of many Australian animals.

Artist statement 

“Three Australian species went extinct in the last decade. 1800 species are currently on the Australian critically endangered list. In the face of The Sixth Mass Extinction, diluted Australian laws bear witness to no government intention to prevent the looming disappearance of hundreds of species. This pavement artwork connects diverse Newtown neighbourhood residents in a shared concern for loss of habitat and species. Converging on this shared theme, diverse locals and visitors can make their mark, sign the petition and bring a political edge to the art ritual. The petition to federal environment minister Josh Frydenberg and the new threatened species commissioner, Dr Sally Box will request the establishment of an Endangered Species Act as well as the imposition of tougher enforcement of threatened species protection and recovery under the EPBC Act. Local experts will give talks on extinction as part of the project”
