Artist statement

"In one of Newtown's iconic terrace houses, a young student reacts in alarm to an impending flood that surges into her life. The youth depicted is struggling with a housing and rental crisis, where life means keeping her head above water. As the tide rushes in, she knocks over the vase of flowers, asking us to question how our actions may impact nature, even if they are involuntary.

The rising tide represents the issues felt by the new generation and addresses the impact past human decisions have made on the local environment, resulting in pollution, flooding and dwindling native sea life. This artwork stands as a monument to concern and action against problems faced by this new generation". Created with residents Deb and Paul, reflecting their connection to the Australian land, love of nature, music and culture. The musical notation is a trumpet solo written by Paul in a song called Water the Seed. It's about the strength and magic of love and how love is like a seed that grows as we care for each other. Love gets into our hearts, our lives and even in our shoes. It's inescapable."
Lyricist, Angie Paice.
