About Newtown ArtSeat
Newtown ArtSeat offers a space where experimental and non-commercial art can be showcased.
It is a permanent structure in Newtown's Pride Square that combines public seating, artwork display and lighting. The site is highly visible and exposes any artwork to thousands of passers-by each day.
The ArtSeat has become a landmark in Newtown.

Artist statement
Dance-A-Queeria is a joyful procession of queer legs in motion, each stepping forward in a different shoe, style, and attitude. Drawing on camp, femininity, and the politics of visibility, the work celebrates difference as collective strength.
The repeating form suggests unity, while the mismatched footwear honours the many ways queer bodies move through the world. By turning a simple walk into a dance, the artwork claims public space as a site of pride, play, resilience, and unapologetic self-expression.

Artist statement
For 10 years Nena has been drawing people while they draw her. The portraits all form part of an ongoing ‘Self Portrait in Society’. In this incarnation, all sittings will take place at the ArtSeat. Nena invites everyone to take part: locals and visitors, artists and non-artists alike. In addition to becoming part of a larger artwork, portraits will be added to the ArtSeat throughout the installation.
To take part, join Nena on Sunday 11 January, 4-7pm to draw and be drawn. Nena may also pop up at random. No luck? Hang out with a pen and paper and find someone to draw. Share your drawings on #YouWereDrawnHere
