Sydney Metro is a new public transport system for Sydney, providing 66 kilometres of metro rail line and 31 metro stations.
Sydney Metro West
Sydney Metro West is the newest of Sydney’s metro rail proposals.
The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the initial stage of this project has recently been exhibited.
It is currently proposed that Metro West will initially run between Sydney CBD and Westmead, via stations at White Bay, Five Dock, Burwood North, North Strathfield, Sydney Olympic Park, Parramatta. Ultimately, the service is planned to be extended to the new Western Sydney Airport at Badgery’s Creek.

Sydney Metro Northwest
Sydney Metro Northwest (between Rouse Hill and Chatswood) is currently under construction and services will start in the first half of 2019.
Sydney Metro City and Southwest
Sydney Metro City and Southwest (between Chatswood and Bankstown) will extend the system through the CBD and on toward Bankstown – this will include a new crossing beneath Sydney Harbour, new stations in the lower North Shore and CBD and the upgrade of existing stations from Sydenham to Bankstown.
Sydney Metro City & Southwest comprises two core components:|
- Chatswood to Sydenham – planning approval was received in January 2017, with construction activities now commencing
- Sydenham to Bankstown – which is the subject of the Environmental Impact Statement currently being assessed by the DPE
The Sydenham to Bankstown project involves upgrading 10 existing stations west of Sydenham (Marrickville to Bankstown inclusive), and upgrading a 13 kilometre long section of the T3 Bankstown Line, between west of Sydenham Station and west of Bankstown Station. The line upgrade aims to provide a better, more convenient, and safer public transport system by delivering: stations that are accessible to everyone; buildings and facilities for all transport modes that meet the needs of a growing population; interchanges that support an integrated transport network and allow seamless transfers between different modes. Sydney Metro will have a long-term target capacity of about 40,000 customers per hour in each direction, similar to other metro systems worldwide.
