Tree works that don't need approval

Inner West Council – Leichhardt

You do not need approval for the following:

  • Removal of trees that are less than 6 metres in height and have a trunk diameter of less than 200 millimetres, when measured at height of 1.4 metres from the ground that are not on a site that is a Heritage Item or within a Heritage Conservation Area.
  • Pruning or removal of noxious weeds under the Noxious Weeds Act 1993.
  • Removal of torn limbs and dead wood up to a maximum of 25% of the tree canopy.
  • Removal of Exempt Tree Species, even when located on a Heritage Item or in a Heritage Conservation Area.
  • Pruning of less than 10% of the canopy up to once every growing season provided the tree is not located on the site of a heritage item. Note: All branches to be pruned must be less than 100 millimetres in diameter.
  • Root pruning of less than 10% of the root system up to once every growing season provided the tree is not located of the site of a heritage item or within a heritage conservation area. The works must be undertaken by an arborist (minimum AQF Level 3 qualified) and not be within the Structural Root Zone of the tree.

All other works need approval.

Inner West Council – Marrickville

You do not need approval for the following:
  • Removal of tree less than 5m in height.
  • Pruning or removal of a canopy less than 3m and a trunk diameter less than 300mm, at ground level.
  • Pruning or removal of noxious weeds under the Noxious Weeds Act 1993.
All other works need approval.

Inner West Council – Ashfield

You do not need approval for the following:
  • Removal of trees smaller than 5 metres.
  • Removal of the following trees: Privet trees, Citrus, Rubber trees, Olive, Rhus, Stone fruits, Cotoneaster, Cocos palms, Coral trees, Golden Cypress conifers and Umbrella trees.
  • Removal of the folloring trees: Camphor laurel, Liquidambar, Poplar and Willow trees provided the tree is within three (3) metres of a dwelling or a sewer line and causing damage to the dwelling or blockage to the sewer line. Only the owners of the tree, dwelling or sewer line directly affected can effect removal under this exemption.
  • Dead trees. If unsure please contact Council.
  • Removal of noxious weeds under the Noxious Weeds Act 1993.
  • Maintenance of minimum clearance of 500mm from domestic power lines.
  • Pruning to remove deadwood/branches.
  • Minor pruning of branches directly overhanging the roof of any building to a height of 2 metres only with the agreement of the owner of the tree.
  • Removal of trees overhanging a public road including footpaths for the purpose of removal of a hazard to a height of 2.4 metres above ground level.
All other works need approval.
