Haven't ridden for a while? A bit rusty on two wheels? Keen to get out on your bike more? Inner West Council is offering free cycling courses for all skill levels.  The courses include the following:

Bike Maintenance Course

This course is designed for those who want to be able to deal with common bike issues. You will learn about bicycle maintenance in a way that makes bicycle mechanics very easy to understand. People leave the course with a really clear understanding of how their bike works and they have a lot of fun along the way.

Following the course you’ll feel empowered to tackle most of the issues you could be confronted with whilst out and about on your bike.

Topics

  • Tooling up: What do you need?
  • Cleaning and lubrication the easy way
  • Wheels off/wheels on and tyres off/tyres on
  • Introduction to cable systems
  • Brakes and gear adjustments (where time allows)

What to bring

  • A bike in good working order (preferable recently serviced). Having a reliable bicycle is important so that you can get the most out of the course
  • A clean rag

Rusty Riders Cycling Course

The Rusty Rider Course is tailored for those who haven't ridden for a while and just need the confidence to start riding more regularly - whether for fun, fitness or to begin getting around their neighbourhood. This course is designed for those who know how to ride but need better bike handling skills before contemplating a ride on the road. The course runs at a slower pace and develops the skills and confidence required to be an effective bike rider.

  • Starting and stopping with ease
  • Using your gears
  • Stopping suddenly and safely
  • Looking behind whilst in a straight line
  • Signalling left and right

What to bring

  • A bike in good working order (instructors will assess your bike's roadworthiness)
  • A helmet
  • Water
  • Sunscreen

This course is designed for those who know how to ride but need better bike handling skills before contemplating a ride on the road. The course runs at a slower pace and develops the skills and confidence required to be an effective bike rider.

City Cycling Confidence Course

This course is designed to develop the skills and confidence required to be an effective bike rider on the road. You will learn how to develop your riding skills to boost your confidence in a quiet off-road location before proceeding out on road as a group on a course that showcases fantastic route options through the inner west that only regular riders know about.

It is designed for people who want to use a bicycle as a means of transport. It establishes the key principles for effective on-street riding and allows participants to put them into practice in real-life scenarios on the road.

Topics covered

  • Classroom: Rights and responsibilities, route planning, traffic and positioning theory
  • Off-street: Control skills and practice
  • Group riding: Cycling in regular traffic between drill sites to establish sensible positioning and showcase the benefits of good route selection
  • On-street: Individual drills of typical scenarios faced by bike riders.

  • A bike in good working order (instructors will assess your bike's road-worthiness)
