Clr Colin Hesse – Marrickville Ward

Background

Colin spent a decade as an organiser with the National Tertiary Education Union, and a dozen years on the NSW Railways where he worked as a Station Assistant, Shunter, Guard and Assistant Station Master in Sydney and near Lithgow.

He has also worked in factories, as an employment officer for the former Commonwealth Employment Service, in State Parliament as an adviser to now retired Greens MP Sylvia Hale, and with Union Aid Abroad, the Australian Council of Trade Unions overseas aid organisation.

Colin is currently employed as foster care recruitment support officer with Marrickville based, not for profit foster care agency, Stretch-A-Family.

Colin is a committed member of the Australian Services Union and has been an elected union delegate in various workplaces.

Colin completed a BA (History) as a mature age student.

Since 2014 Colin has presented a local affairs program every Thursday morning on Marrickville based community radio station Radio Skid Row 88.9FM.

Colin sang for many years with Solidarity Choir in Newtown, and played soccer with the Hurlstone Park Wanderers.

He is also in a book club and is a keen fan of live music.

Aims as a Councillor

  • Support local residents in having a greater say in the work Council does, in particular campaigning for a greater say for local residents in major planning decisions such as WestConnex, and the proposed Metro Rail redevelopment and associated re-zoning.
  • Work with residents to make Marrickville, St Peters, Sydenham and Tempe better places to live, with quieter tree lined streets, better footpaths and quality recreational opportunities.
  • Work with Council to stand up for local residents.

  • Sydenham to Bankstown Urban Renewal Working Party;
  • Cooks River Alliance Board (Alternate);
  • Sydney Coastal Councils Group; and
  • NSW Public Libraries Association
