Iconic Mardi Gras event finds new home in Marrickville

Monday 2 February 2026

Inner West Council has entered a landmark partnership with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras that will bring the iconic Sissy Ball to its new home in Marrickville in February 2026.

At its most recent meeting, Council resolved to support the delivery of the Sissy Ball at Marrickville Town Hall marking a major expansion of Mardi Gras celebrations into Sydney’s Inner West.

Alongside hosting Sissy Ball, this new partnership will see Inner West Council march in the Mardi Gras parade, for the first time ever.

There are also several events and collaborations to support the Inner West Community including free temporary workshop space for Mardi Gras float construction, a Council stall at Mardi Gras Fair Day and Council’s Mardi Gras events such as our regular live screening of the parade and our Feel The Love event.

Inner West Councillor Jess D’Arienzo said the decision reflects the Inner West’s long-standing role as a home for LGBTQIA+ communities and culture.

“The Inner West has always been at the heart of Sydney’s queer history, activism and creativity,” Councillor D’Arienzo said.

“Bringing the Sissy Ball to Marrickville is about recognising that legacy, celebrating our diverse communities, and making sure Mardi Gras truly reflects the whole city. We’re proud to support an event that champions self-expression, inclusion and joy.”

Councillor Jess D’Arienzo said the collaboration strengthens visibility and participation for local queer communities.

“This partnership ensures Inner West voices are front and centre during Mardi Gras,” Cr D’Arienzo said.

“From local events being promoted in the official Mardi Gras program to our presence at Fair Day and in the Parade, this is about genuine inclusion, not tokenism. Hosting the Sissy Ball here sends a powerful message that queer culture belongs everywhere.”

Council also resolved to continue negotiations with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on a longer-term partnership, with a focus on the festival’s 50-year anniversary in 2028, and to work with organisers to explore opportunities for queer youth participation in the 2026 Sissy Ball.

Councillor D’Arienzo said the longer-term vision was particularly important.

“This isn’t just a one-off event,” she said.

“We’re building a partnership that supports young people, nurtures creative expression, and ensures the Inner West plays a leading role in Mardi Gras now and into its 50th year.”

Further details about the 2026 Sissy Ball, including venue confirmation and ticketing, will be announced by Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras closer to the festival.
