  • Clean up of cars within the impacted zone has been completed and cars released to owners.
  • Council clean up of the Road Reserve is completed and restoration of grassed and landscaped areas within the road reserve will be programmed in coming weeks.
  • Council clean up of external areas of properties adjacent the affected areas of the road reserve has concluded.
  • Should property owners/occupiers have further concerns in relation to potential contamination of their property they should make their own arrangements for inspection and cleaning. Owners/ occupiers should contact their insurance company or estate agent to progress any further action.
  • Road closures will remain in place adjacent 101 Australia Street and Eton Street pending works by the property owner to make safe the fire damaged building.

Car cleaning

The cleanup of residents' cars has been completed with cars released to owners.

Turf and landscaped areas

The removal of landscaping and grassed areas is complete. Restoration of these areas will be scheduled in the following weeks.

Detailed cleaning of property frontages and roofs

Detailed cleaning of property frontages and roofs is progressing with completion scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Further detailed cleaning of roads and footpaths

Detailed cleaning of roads and footpaths is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Inspection of property backyards

Process for inspection and cleaning of backyards has now been completed. Should property owners/occupiers have any further concerns in relation to potential contamination of their property they should make their own arrangements for inspection and cleaning.

Road closures

In the interests of public safety, road closures will remain in place until further notice, pending works by the owner to make safe the fire-damaged building.

Car cleaning

It is anticipated that all residents cars will be cleaned and tested by the end of today and tests sent to the laboratory for testing. Results of the testing should be available tomorrow from midday. Please refer to Council’s website for further details and instructions on collection of your car.

Turf and landscaped areas

Removal of affected turf and landscaped areas is scheduled for completion today.

Cleaning front of properties and roofs

Cleaning of affected property frontages and gutter/roofs started today with expected completion Wednesday evening/Thursday morning.

Further detailed cleaning of roads and footpaths

Further detailed cleaning of the roads and footpaths will commence tomorrow after removal of all cars and turfed/landscaped areas.

Inspection of property backyards

Inspections of property backyards has commenced with two properties this morning. Inspection of rear yards is desirable if residents can provide access to Council’s contractors by tomorrow. (contact Stewart on 0411 674128)

Update: Monday 18 June, 4:15pm

Initial clean of road and paved areas and front of affected properties is continuing this afternoon.

Further detailed cleaning will continue tomorrow, including removal of grassed and landscaped areas within the road reserve, cleaning of areas under parked cars, and within front of properties as required.

Plants, door mats and pots within the contaminated area will be removed by Council’s contractors. Any roofs within the exclusion zone that have evidence of contamination will be cleaned. The front of properties will also receive a further detailed wipe down. Inspection of rear yards will also be undertaken where possible, and Council thanks residents for their cooperation in this.

Cleaning of affected cars is progressing but is taking longer than expected due to the detailed work involved. Cars are being made available progressively as clearance is obtained over Tuesday and Wednesday. Registration numbers of cars available for pickup will be provided on this website as they are released. Any cars within the exclusion zone cannot be removed until cleared. Keys should be made available to Newtown Police to enable access for cleaning.

The following road closures will remain in place until further notice:

  • Australia Street from Salisbury Road to Fowler Street
  • Eton Lane
  • Fowler Lane
  • Eton Street

Residents within the exclusion area can access their property with caution. However it is recommended that they remain indoors with doors and windows closed and should not use air conditioning. Personal Protective Equipment will be available from onsite traffic control for use by residents.

It is recommended that the following properties are not accessed at this time:

  • 19 and 21 Eaton Street
  • 103 and 105 Australia Street

Emergency services and Hazmat crews responded to the scene at yesterday’s fire in an ex-factory warehouse in Camperdown and precautions were taken post-fire to commence the decontamination of the area.

Inner West Council staff, asbestos removal contractors and an industrial hygienist are currently on site, where they are continuing to assess, secure and clean the area.

Actions include cleaning nearby vehicles of waste and dust, and accessing nearby roofs for assessment and cleaning.

Currently, Council has closed the following roads:

  • Australia Street from Salisbury Road to Fowler Street
  • Eton Lane
  • Fowler Lane
  • Eton Street

Areas to be decontaminated:

  • All cars within the decontamination area
  • All road surfaces, pavements, etc.
  • 40-58 Australia street on opposite side of road to have front yards decontaminated – including all porous items removed, garden beds scraped, wet wiped and vacuumed and gutters and roofs cleaned
  • 107-95 Australia street decontaminated

Grass to be scraped from nature strip of all houses being decontaminated:

  • 16-28 Eton Street
  • 17-21 Eton Street

Access to rear yards for inspection:

  • 28 Eton Street
  • 26 Eton Street
  • 21 Eton Street
  • 15-17 Eton Street
  • 99 Australia Street
  • 103, 105 107 Australia Street

For owners of the cars in the exclusion zone cleaning of all vehicles should be complete by 4pm. Car owners can collect their car keys from Police on the corner of Salisbury Road and Australia Street then.

As decontamination and cleaning is completed, Council will progressively reduce the exclusion zone.
