06 Sep 2017
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Piazza Level - Italian Forum, 23 Norton StLeichhardt, NSW, Australia
Moving pictures were first screened in Newtown in 1898. They were a sensation and attracted huge audiences. Screenings took place in pre-existing halls, then in open-air 'picture gardens' and finally in enclosed theatres built especially for the medium. These movie theatres copied the design and features of legitimate theatres, and came to be known as 'picture palaces' and later as cinemas.
Robert Parkinson, author of Picture Shows in the Marrickville and Newtown Districts 1898-2012, will give an overview of this development and the public's involvement.
