Council Pushes for Genuine WestConnex Consultation

The Inner West Council is urging the Sydney Motorway Corporation to make sure that its upcoming public meetings contain genuine community consultation and are attended by key motorway staff, in order to engage directly with residents and businesses affected by Stage 3 of the WestConnex motorway.

Administrator Richard Pearson said the Sydney Motorway Corporation needs to ensure its planned series of ‘community idea sessions’ to be held this month amounted to genuine consultation about the proposed Rozelle interchange and Victoria Rd tunnel to Iron Cove Bridge.

“There has also been limited engagement with Council and the community seeking input for the series of community idea sessions that the Sydney Motorway Corporation plans to run this month.

“Council is calling on the Corporation to make sure the meetings are genuine and comprehensive consultation sessions presented by key staff who can answer the real questions and concerns of residents, not just an information session presented by spokespeople.

“Residents need an opportunity to shape the project, not just be treated as a ‘tick and flick’ exercise

Mr Pearson said Council continues to oppose all aspects of the Westconnex project.

“There is no doubt that stage three part of the WestConnex project from the M4 in Haberfield to the M5 in St Peters will have an enormous impact on the future lives of many of our residents and businesses,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the information so far circulating from Sydney Motorway Corporation to Rozelle residents and businesses through both the media and in information flyers has simply created further uncertainty and anxiety for the local community.”

“It is vital the community are much better informed about what this project will mean for the Rozelle area in particular as well as given the opportunity to influence plans for the project as soon as possible.

“A genuine public meeting is one clear way to ensure that feedback is delivered directly.”

The State Government has advised that they will release a report on the feedback from the meetings in September or October.
