Community Welcomes WestConnex Compliance Officer

Thursday 28 July, 2016

WestConnex Action Groups from across the Inner West have welcomed the appointment of a new WestConnex Compliance officer based at Inner West Council.

Rob Sherry was introduced at the initial forum of local WestConnex action groups held at the Leichhardt Service Centre last Thursday.

Administrator Richard Pearson said Mr Sherry has begun work based at Council and has the powers to ensure that any compliance issues residents have with the project are addressed and resolved.

“The appointment of Rob Sherry to the key role is a win for the Inner West Council with WestConnex an issue of such vital community and Council concern,” he said.

“The only other major issue such as this that has a dedicated compliance officer is the Hunter Valley coal mining industry.

“To have Mr Sherry located here and responding immediately to concerns about any construction compliance breaches will ensure that the contractors carrying out the WestConnex work are held to account for their actions.

“And his visible presence can only serve as a deterrent to breaches.”

The position of WestConnex Compliance Officer was successfully lobbied for by the Inner West Council Administrator Mr Richard Pearson, and is being fully funded by the State Government.

Mr Pearson also said the Inner West Council has been informed that Sydney Motorway Corporation will begin community consultation regarding the third stage of WestConnex, which will impact residents in Rozelle and Lilyfield, in August.

“We have said to them in the strongest terms that we want to see genuine consultation and public meetings where they will answer our residents directly,” he said.

Council is providing offices for the Compliance Officer so that he can be based locally and residents can contact him more easily with concerns about work on Westconnex.

Residents can talk to him if they feel that construction crews are not complying with their development consent – including issues like noise, dust, out of hours work, salvaging of heritage items or vegitation removal.

Mr Sherry can be contacted on 0429 782 853 or at compliance@planning.nsw.gov.au
