National Tree Day

National Tree DayNational Tree Day is Australia's largest tree-planting and nature care event. The next National Tree Day is on Sunday 30 July 2017.

Each year on the last Sunday in July, more than 200,000 people take part in National Tree Day events at thousands of sites organised by councils, schools, businesses and communities across the country.

Inner West Council celebrates National Tree Day every year with community tree planting days at various sites. These new trees will contribute to the area's biodiversity and urban canopy for years to come.

There are three planting sites for 2017: Leichhardt Park, Leichhardt; Richard Murden Reserve, Haberfield; and Steel Park, Marrickville. All welcome!

Leichhardt Park, Lilyfield

Sunday 30 July from 10am–12pm

The site is located near the foreshore at the southern end of Leichhardt Park, with access via Maliyawul Drive off Lilyfield Road. The planting will establish 400 sq. metres of bushland in extension of an existing GreenWay site.

We also intend to plant an adjoining corridor of large native trees along the foreshore. The overall aim is to provide shade and cooling, beautify the park, increase native floral biodiversity and provide habitat and forage for native birds, reptiles, mammals and insects.

We will provide gloves, tools, watering cans/buckets, drinking water and refreshments. The day will involve planting followed by a sausage sizzle.

For more information or to RSVP, contact Doug Anderson on doug.anderson@innerwest.nsw.gov.au.

Richard Murden Reserve, Haberfield

Sunday 30 July from 9am–12pm

This is a Biolinks site that is situated at the northern end of Richard Murden Reserve. We will be planting local native tube stock from the Sydney sandstone vegetation community.

Please meet at the corner of Dobroyd and Hawthorne Parades, Haberfield, on the southern side of the City West Link overpass at Iron Cove.

We will provide gloves, tools, watering cans/buckets, drinking water and refreshments. The day will involve planting and a plant giveaway.

For more information or to RSVP, contact Adam Ward on 02 9716 1865.

Steel Park, Marrickville

Sunday 30 July from 10am–12pm

Sandwiched between mangroves and saltmarsh vegetation (including sandstone rocks and crevices) on the banks of Cooks River and pockets of Swamp Oak floodplain forest vegetation, the site provides connectivity between these habitats increasing sheltering, breeding and foraging resources to fauna.

This site is adjacent to our 2016 National Tree Day site and revegetating this site will contribute to our Habitat Enhancement & Connectivity Strategy.

Steel Park is at 531-565 Illawarra Road, Marrickville (the northeast corner between Cooks River and the shared cycle/pedestrian pathway). Steel Park is on bus route 423 or a 15 minute walk from Marrickville train station.

We will provide gloves, tools, watering cans/buckets, drinking water and refreshments. The day will involve planting and a plant giveaway.

For more information or to RSVP, see the National Tree Day website or call Helen Knowles on 02 9392 5363.
