Pics in the park Pics in the Park is our summer free outdoor movie program where Pioneers Memorial Park in Leichhardt and Mort Bay Park in Balmain are transformed into outdoor cinemas.

2017 Program

The series will launch on Friday with a screening of Australian feature film Spear on 27 January at Leichhardt's Pioneers Memorial Park to celebrate Council's fifth annual Yabun Movie Night.

Each night starts at sunset with family-friendly short films followed by the feature film:

Spear: Friday 27 January – Pioneers Memorial Park, Leichhardt
Djali,a young Aboriginal man journeys through his community to understand what it means to be a man with ancient traditions in a modern world.

Clueless: Friday 10 February – The Village Green, Mort Bay Park, Balmain
A rich high school student tries to boost a new pupil's popularity, but reckons without affairs of the heart getting in the way.

The Legend of Tarzan: Friday 24 February – Pioneers Memorial Park, Leichhardt
Tarzan, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment.

Paper Planes: Friday 10 March – The Village Green, Mort Bay Park, Balmain
An imaginative children's film about a young Australian boy's passion for flight and his challenge to compete in the World Paper Plane Championships in Japan.

The Yabun Movie Night is a 2017 Yabun Festival event. It’s a collaboration between with Koori Radio 93.7FM (Gadigal Information Service Aboriginal Corporation), the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence and Inner West Council. Yabun is Australia’s premier Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander festival, celebrating the survival of and showcasing the best of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture. All Pics in the Park events are free, and drugs and alcohol are not allowed. You are welcome to make a gold coin donation on the night, which will be donated to Twenty10 – a community-based, non-profit, organisation that works with and supports young people of diverse genders, sexes and sexualities, their families and communities. The Yabun Movie Night supports Council’s commitment to promote Aboriginal culture past, present and future. Pics in the Park supports Council’s commitment to provide community events, support the arts and improve access to community facilities, particularly for young people.
